Colombo is often overlooked by tourists who travel to Sri Lanka. Many land at Bandaranayake International Airport and drive straight down South. I urge you to spend a day or two in the capital: it’s beautiful and has plenty to offer.
Mind you, I wouldn’t spend a day in Colombo walking around and sightseeing. I always say that Colombo is best for two things: dining and shopping. And so my guides reflect that. If I were you, I would spend the day casually moving (by tuk-tuk, don’t walk!) from one restaurant to another and from one boutique shop to the next. Eat local food, buy artisan souvenirs. And if you do want to be adventurous and suffer under the scorching Sri Lankan sun, then go explore the Fort and Pettah market.
My guides are a labor of love and a token of appreciation for Colombo, my home away from home. I lived here for several years and have been coming back to the capital of Sri Lanka every year for over a decade to see my family. The guides include my favorite, tried-and-true spots — I have been to each and every restaurant and shop I mention and can wholeheartedly recommend them. I hope these guides help you spend a wonderful time in Colombo!
